Dubbed the “father of Pop Art”,  English artist Richard Hamilton who died in Oxfordshire this week aged 89.

Towards a definitive statement on the coming trends in mens’ wear and accessories” ( mixed media, 1962 )

Apart from renown works perceptively, if somewhat sardonically, delivering social commentary on his times,
Richard deserved great credit for his brave Dada-like spirit and stance in incorporating morally-motivated political
protest into several of his major works, despite their probably having had a career-limiting effect; notably;

Blair, mid-2000s – the image gun-slings for itself.

* Interestingly, In the early 1960s Hamilton received a grant from the Arts Council to investigate the condition of the Dadaist
Kurt Schwitters ‘Merzbau’ ( Merz Barn ) near Elterwater, Great Langdale Cumbria. The research eventually resulted in Hamilton organising the preservation of the work by relocating it to the Hatton Gallery in the Newcastle University.

Three essentials encapsulating the spirit of Dada, the ” Three P’s “..
Perception, Protest and Play.

We continue on with our New Dada ” They Who Have Seen the Light ” series…

This particular gentleman was colour-coded down to designer glasses, shoes
and the bagel he was munching while waiting… but corduroy? In 2011?
Yet if he lives long enough and the adage is valid, he will stick around long
enough for this 1970s secondary school teacher fashion crime to return again.

About the work.

Interest was evoked by a surprise reversal of nature in this public space, a large
Ivy creeper growing inwards – towards the dark – and almost inevitably gaining access
through the narrowest of spaces. Additionally the frosted silhouette of this secretive
plant, with its ancient associations with witchcraft and the occult,
empowering it
with somewhat sinister and menacing overtones, even perhaps invoking disturbing
echos of the shower scene in Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Out for a weekday amble, we pass a 3-acre field recently torched by some

Field Beans and..
a creative spark was struck.
