A Merry Dada White Christmas to All

Re-post from 2007 by our dastardly clever direct art action artist Art Axis and equally applicable 9 years on, where no one in the UK today is waking up to a White Christmas, courtesy of an exceptionally mild SW airstream covering the entire British Isles.

SOME SAY,
he can memorize the bible back to front.
OTHERS, that he’s the grandson of Marcel Duchamp who was adopted by Salvador Dali as a child….

All we know is …. he’s called ART AXIS, our resident direct action Dada artist and he wants to not wish but give you all a Merry DADA White Christmas, in probably the only place in the entire UK this year, courtesy of 10 X 5 litres of a well-known brand of washing up liquid poured into Sudbury municipal fountain at 6am this very Xmas eve morn. A strong to gale force westerly blew the huge suds tumbling through the town, causing major hilarity and traffic disruption among the feverish last-minute Xmas shoppers..:))

( Larger pics are click-thru enlargeable again )

Enjoy.

BERNARD MATTHEWS Guardian report.

” ..The main slaughterhouse is in the plant, which also houses its butchering and deboning facilities. Inside, there are many sights that are not for the faint-hearted.

At 6.30am every day the first turkeys arrive by lorry for slaughter, and are taken straight into a “lairage” or holding area. After being “settled” under dim blue lights that create artificial darkness, they are carried, in the crates they were delivered in – like chests of drawers – along a conveyor belt before being lowered into the unit in which their short lives will come to a swift and painless end.

Controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) renders the birds unconscious within 10 seconds due to lack of oxygen; two minutes later they are dead (?)
the killing time

.

The freshly killed ( ? ) still-feathered turkeys then start on a highly mechanised process during which they are scalded, plucked, eviscerated, decapitated, trussed, packaged and labelled…
bootiful

First, the birds’ feet are turned to point the same way before they are shackled and raised up onto a mechanised line that takes them on their journey to becoming a “turkey product”. The two main arteries in their necks are cut by hand and the blood drained, before they are sent towards the automated plucking machines, which extract the feathers with Wallace-and-Gromit style “rubber fingers”. The unpleasant smell that permeates the air comes from the damp feathers, but staff apparently get used to it… ”

” People would be horrified if they saw the reality of factory farms. You cannot describe the environment. They should think about the conditions these animals live in not to mention their own health before buying or indeed consuming factory-farmed meat products.”

The Ageist Turner Prize

downloads2-001

Top; Rain, Steam and Speed, lower left; The Fighting Temeraire and right; Snow Storm

In an age where racism and sexism in art and elsewhere has become a virtual hanging matter, the blatant annual ageism event that is the Turner Prize doesn’t appear to bat an art establishment / national museum director or mainstream media eyelid.

Art Axis 2016

The Under 50s Turner Prize, this year back at Tate Britain again – discriminating against older artists of every race and color since 1984
London Dada – campaigning against the ageist TP since 2006

* UPDATE Summer 2017; Turner Prize directors decide to finally abandon the grotesque UNDER-50s rule for entries after 10 years of protest by LONDON DADA. As far as we’re aware no other artist or group of artists bothered to publically denounce or protest this outdated and preposterous rule. Perhaps an indication of how the grip of fear of harming career prospects by speaking out is predominating over taking morally-based actions – or even voicing them; amongst UK artists. How shameful is the state of UK art
_____________________________________________________________

At last, finally, a morally-motivated artwork of true perception and protest in line with Dada’s original spirit as expressed by Hugo Ball; gets nominated for the Prize – but will the judges go against their own self-serving play-safe don’t-rock-the-political-boat grains and have the moral backbone to award it the top spot it richly deserves?
* UPDATE 6th December
No is, of course, the blunt answer; the terminally safe polished imitation Schwitters/Merz art of Helen Martens wins through. No self-respecting TP judge would dare risk his/her personal little career apple cart and future royal gong hopes by plumping for an artwork that comments at all perceptively or critically on the grim situation predominating in large parts of the UK today, such as..

turnerprizemartindeanpennies

The work (United Kingdom poverty line for two adults and two children: twenty thousand four hundred and thirty six pounds sterling, by Michael Dean [39] ) consists of £20,436 in pennies. This is the amount of money the government states is the minimum that two adults and two children need to survive for a year in the UK. When installing the work, Dean removed one coin, meaning that now the money you see before you is one penny less than the poverty line.

nnn
AF; representing a time-honoured ageist as well as elitist glass-ceilinged institution.
One green bottler TP judge chair sitting on the fence… knows which side his career bread’s buttered on. Of course guarding well against accidental falls into career-limiting approval of art showing any degree of perceptive criticism of the hard times we live in, plays a large part in how these one-dimensional jobsworths rise to eventually be annointed directors of art institutions
